Ayurveda For The Common Cold

Common cold is a problem for everyone. It commonly affects any one. Can we prevent it?

In Ayurveda, the common cold is termed as “Pratishyaya”. Ayurveda, the study of science that deals with living and knowledge of life, is an ancient system of medicine. Ayurveda believes that all the three doshas are responsible for the occurrence of common cold. People with the doshas suffer with this disorder in different ways, like –

– People with vata dosha suffers from dry coughs, little mucus discharge, hoarse voice, headache and a runny nose.

– People with pitta dosha suffers from fever, sore throat, yellowish nasal discharge and continuous blockage of the nose.

– People with kapha dosha suffers from thick mucus discharges with dull headaches and heaviness of the head.

Home remedies are helpful in most of the cases in treating this disorder. Most of the required herbs such as cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), Cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum), Onion (Allium cepa), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) are commonly available at home. In addition, Jaggery, Black pepper and Lemon are also effectively used. Home remedies work best when applied on the prodome (tingling) stage of the disease.

Common cold is infectious, and if you have got infected with this disorder, should take all due precaution that it doesn’t pass on to other members at home.
